Well not entirely new, but kinda. Lets do a little back tracking. On my dieting/lifestyle changes in around October 2009 after attending CF Nutrition cert with Robb Wolf. I decided to give Paleo a serious go. Everyone had a blog talking about all these great changes upon going Paleo, weight loss, feeling great, performing well, the world becoming a new a brighter world. Well I quite frankly didn't really have any of that. I didn't really lose any weight. Performance did well, but I had never plateaued, so was it diet or just getting better at CF? I will say I think it did help with my recovery and soreness, but other than that I didn't FEEL any different. Other then when I cheated, then, then I paid a mighty price...but only sometimes. My stomach became bipolar. One day good eating 'good', another bad while eating 'good'. And both of the opposites there too. I never dropped a pound. I felt OK, but not good, and I had definitely BAD days. Eventually in a round about way I eventually found nightshades and I could no longer be friends. Thus causing bad guts on days I ate 'clean'. And eating them with at least gluten dulled the ill effects of the nightshade...why I had good days eating badly. However with the nightshades I lost a few pounds, especially noticeable in my face. I now sat at 162#-165#. Meh. I felt I look sloppy. Like someone who works out a lot obut eats a lot of pizza and drinks a lot of beer. I did neither. I was still performing decent (somedays I had it somedays just didn't). I felt like I should look better for the amount of effort I put into diet and exercise. Plus I have been thinner, and I am far from a six pack so I know it is possible, there is some to lose. Then suddenly last September/August I really started to feel like my clothes were fitting better and I like how I looked in them. I weighed myself at 158#. Thinking it was just an accident, but it stuck for a few weeks and eventually down to 155# and 152# at my lowest (that wasn't food poisoning related). I was super jazzed and was still performing really and strength was doing well too. Snatch PR of 154 (w/in 1 pound of BW! at the time). Still having some belly issues sometimes but all in all not too shabby and I finally felt better about how I looked. I got rid of all my old clothes, finally! Then Christmas hit and pants felt a little tighter got on the scale at the Holidays, oops got too laxed and now up to 160#. Oh well a Whole 30 challenge was coming up I'll get back down to it there. I started the Whole 30 at162#, 30 days meat, veggies, little fruit, and some nuts and seeds, no alcohol. At the end of the 30days I was 160# and felt awful. The entire 30 days, I made 1 half solid....elimination. Otherwise I made #1 for #2. For 30 days. I also was having trouble STAYING asleep. I passed out by 9 or 10 like champ and anywhere between 1am and 3 would wake up and be wide awake and alert. So I started dong laundry, cleaning, etc. Making me more exhausted by days end. We finally figured out what was causing that and eliminated it, and I had been eliminated before right at the weight loss and added back in about the time of the gain again. I was excited for things to get better again and things slowly got better, sleep wise and digestively. Weight wise, nada. Then we found a possible Thyroid issue, worked on that. No changes. By March I was now back to 168#-172#, but my stomach feels better. I am now heavier than I was before I lost the nightshade inflammation. I gained all the weight (and then some) I lost by not doing anything different, by doing the same thing that lost it. I went qualified and competed in regionals and finished 18th overall out of about 30. I'll take it. I did notice as sectionals went on my energy got worse. I got some virus the Monday before regionals and spent an entire night throwing up, and the next day in bed with slight fever. By Friday was top 6 going into Saturday. Although WOD 1 didn't go as well as I hoped (I felt so weak), I did well in the thruster wod. Super stoked to be there and excited for DL box jump. 2-3 weeks prior I did 21-15-9 dl ring dip with 225 and it felt good so this 205dl was going to be cake! WRONG! I was sore and tired and just fried. It felt heavier than 185#, form was crap everything. Frustrating. Next was I was really, really sore and tired. the 100s. By the time I hit 30 pullups I was down to singles. My grip was completely shot, and my hands torn and bleeding. I was so embarassed. I was the last one off the bar by 2min. I was never good at pullups but this was really really bad. KB I struggled with my judge trying to figure out what I need to do to do them right. Once we understood eachother it came down to grip. I couldn't hold on. Double unders were easy, aside the fact I couldn't hold on. I finally got to OHS and my legs felt great, but couldn't hold that bar up! I got 40 OHS, considering how far behind I was there were still a lot of people on OHS. I'll take it. Stupid grip. I didn't make it to the next day and I am sooooo ok with that. My forearms hurt so badly, I had to pump my gas with two hands. By the time I hit Missoula (3 hours from home 7 after my from my departure) I was in tears, I couldn't hold onto the steering wheel it hurt so badly. The next week I rested, by choice. But I couldn't do a damn thing if I wanted. I couldn't hold onto anything. I couldn't row (that was the most painful) I couldn't pull up without my forearm completely straining and pulling. I even hurt it closing the window. 2 weeks of pain, and finally got better, and energy was still low. I still struggle with grip frying too fast and energy being low. And my weight. I did somethings to help de-stress my mind hoping that would work. Nada. As I am starting to undo my less stressed work I decided to try something new again. It was recommended by a friend who I have watched get good results in her first montn or so, so I am hoping this could work for me. Today was my first day, of a 10 day run, and I knew it would be tough, I didn't expect day 1 meal 1 to be so tough. It took me over an hour to put down all the food. It is sort of a lot, but not really ( I have put down more pizza in shorter time), I am also learning that foods I don't like are hard to eat in mass quanities. Avocados...oh man you...you...you...ugh there are no words! You may gag me, but you will not defeat me. I finished eating at 8:45am (started 7:30am), it is now 2pm and still kinda full. I still have 2 meals to go. Oh my. I am trying to stay focused on the goal. This will work! This Will Work! This WILL Work! This WILL WORK! THIS WILL WORK!

This was AWESOME!

I tried the intro to trapeze a few weeks ago, but his was a lot more intense! I went to an aerial fabric dancing workshop. This was very challenging but a lot of fun. Especially because have a problem with being up high (I wouldn't say I am afraid of heights- I just happen to panic when I notice I am up high that's all). I don't think I would have been able to do this had I not gone climbing/bouldering a few weeks ago and got a little more comfortable with my strength and trusting myself. Also I officially climbed the rope at the gym for the first time the day before, again the up high thing. So the first picture I am doing the 'gazelle' (?)oh I wish I had pointed my toes. The next pictures I don't know what the moves were called but I got to do a drop. You get your legs wrapped in the fabric (the diaper- wow uncomfortable- you can see my butt being squished), and you have to pull yourself up, pull your legs through, cross and pull legs through again. Then when you are level you lean forward and then you 'drop' and your knees catch the fabric and you dangle! I had a hard time getting dropped at first then someone told me to channel my Dirty Dancing swan jump/pose and I got it! Scary but fun! I really liked this class, wonder how I can cram this into my schedule?

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VzWBPg7pECo/TViH-FDs8RI/AAAAAAAAAR8/1mfw106aozk/s1600/gazelle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; I thought maybe it was a little left over "Grace" lung from a few days prior, but thinking back I felt like pooh after my 2k like shaky and achy. The next day I was really sore and achy too. It was a downhill spiral after that. My dear friend Erika from Tacoma, WA came to visit me! I thought it had only been a year or two since I last saw her, it has been 6!! Too long! She came to visit and I proceeded to cough more and sound worse. I got an awful rough sounding voice from all my coughing. After my throat healed up the cough changed and suddenly my ribs felt like they were going to bust. In particular the right side, which I cracked in high school, but no lump this time. Then last week on the car ride home to ND my left side started to ache. I tired to workout at home the first day went alright, the second was painful and slow, and my rib was quite angry after wards. I am thinking in one of my last coughing fits I pulled a muscle because it hurt to the touch, but I could lay on my side. However if I rotated my shoulders forward it hurt like son-of-a-gun! Now, nearly 4 weeks later and I am just finally starting to not have a cough! Rib feels the best today than in 3 weeks, so I am hoping for more progress this weekend. I have done like 1 workout a week since getting sick :( Then I went home and went waaaaay off my normal eating habits, and have lost motivation to get back on, even though I feel yucky. The good news is that during my illness the few workouts I did, I set some PRs! I am now the proud owner of a 63kg Snatch (138#),a 155# Thruster, 81kg Clean and Jerk (178#), 84kg Clean (185#), 85kg Jerk (187#), and a 245# Back Squat. I'll take it.

On a sad and different note my uncle, Stephen McLeish, passed away April 16th, after a year long battle with cancer. Tossed and turned until 1am until I decided to just get up and do some housework done. Finally about 2:30 I felt sleepy again. This time I made my room EXTRA dark. Either I was finally exhausted or the extra darkness really helped. I think its the darkness, actually I know its the darkness. I toss and turn a lot if I don't close my blinds all the way or leave the DVD player on. Jenna and I decided to have a "Grace" off. "Grace" is 30 reps ground to over head for time (clean and jerk). I have done this workout with 85# in 3:26, 95# in 3:50, and 135# in 6:27. All three were really hard and my lungs burned (among other things) afterward especially after the 85#. I thought 3:26 was going to be impossible for me to beat. My training has not been consistent for several months now, and I suffered a minor back injury just over 2 weeks ago and just started going full weight again. I no longer feel any pain or discomfort aside from some stiffness after, however it feels a little shaky under heavy weights. Plus after my injury I've had some trouble staying focused on a good diet, and I was really nervous that I was not going to beat my previous time. I chose 85# for speed (and some other reasons), since Jenna was trying to beat a 2 min and change time she set earlier that week with 55#. I should also mention that Jenna is 31 weeks pregnant, so this will be quite the task for her. All I want to do is keep up with the pregnant lady! With a video camera, counters, and an audience we took off at 3-2-1 go! I didn't want to drop it until I had to, but I forgot and dropped at about rep 7 or 8, but tired to quickly recover I think almost half of the workout I was not centered. I felt good until rep 15 and started to feel tired, rep 20 really tired my form felt horribly sloppy and toes-y. I could hear Jenna's shoes, click and clack, I tried to match but couldn't keep up. She finished in 1:47, and I in 2:18! Oh did my lungs BURN! A PR of 1min 8 sec! I can't believe it! I would have never thought I could to 45# that fast, let alone 85#! Video coming soon!

I am still having trouble getting back off the crack of my diet. Ice Cream (Moose Tracks!), pizza, cream, cheese, and few other delicious autoimmune disease filled dishes have really been hard to kick this time around. I was pretty good Oct-Dec being able to easily battle cravings, but January and increasingly through now, cravings have gotten harder to ignore. Its totally a mind game for me, and I am lacking mental toughness. At home I eat pretty good, but I have darn near quit trying when I go out. I need to dig in and re-group. I've had good results in my workouts on Paleo, but I was a not satisfied with my physical changes (or I guess lack of!) and I didn't really feel any different. Aside from some workout PRs, they only other difference I think I came across was with my slack training is that I was rarely sore. Last year this time I was sore ALL the time. Moaning and groaning like I was 100 years old. Thinking it was my diet, I am not starting to wonder if massage and acupuncture has also helped in my lack of soreness. Hmmm. Or maybe it was all of the above? In my quest to find focus in my diet I am playing around with how I want to "dial" it in this time, in an effort to keep performance results up, and now looking for more physical changes. How to do that? Less protein? Lower Carb? Adding dairy again? At least trying to eat more vegetables and trying remain "Paleo" without going insane. Above is a picture of my dinner tonight. I had a lazy morning, and took a dip in the hot springs this afternoon. When I came back I was STARVING! I had country style boneless pork ribs, bacon wrapped asparagus, and steamed broccoli with a homemade hollandaise type sauce. Mmmm delicious, and hit the spot! Now if I only had some Moose Tracks ice cream!

Snatch PR!

New Snatch PR of 135# ! Old PR was 131# or 132# And this time I actually got underneath it, i did take a few tries but I got it. Only 100 more pounds for body weight snatch. ha! Unfortunately. between this, some slight soreness from Monday's deadlifts and that mornings massage I only got 155# in the clean and jerk. I cleaned 165#, but was just plain ol' shot after that. I have been having trouble in my front squats. The right side of my back feels like its about to blow when I hit 195# in sets of three. The first one goes alright but the next two are frightening. I haven't gone up in weight for fear I will really pull something. Plus its really hard! I am pretty sure I have done over 205# for three to five. But I also thought that was on vimeo but I guess that was only like 165# or 175# so maybe I really haven't done sets at 205. Hmmm.

I set a max pullup record. Old record was like 11 or 12, got 16 the other day. I think I could have done more if I regripped a little better but I lost it and fell off. I am still horrible at pullups.

And finally I attempted "Fran" today (21-15-9 reps of 65# thrusters and pullps for time) I was dreading this. I can't even remember the last time I did this I think it has been over 6 months but I know my time was 6:46. I was hoping the next time I attempted this workout I would would get under 6, but my training has been terribly inconsistent I thought I was doomed. I was thought if I fought I could PR, but figured sub 6 would be out of the question. My other goals was to get all rounds of thrusters unbroken. The damn 15 rep round is the worst! I always have to break it up. This time it was a fight to get to 8 and then finished the last 7. Pullups felt the best they ever been, something was finally clicking. I still didn't do many in a row, but they felt a little better than previous pullup workouts. I still had to rest, a lot. My end time was 5:56. PR by 50 seconds. Wasn't expecting that. :)

I think a large contributor to my success has been my diet. However, I have to really wonder "is it really?" I have been pretty good on the "Paleo" for about 2 months. And I gotta say, all that feels different is now when I do eat gluten I get siiiiick (I had some carrot cake at thanksgiving that I paid for shortly after). I've read all these paleo blogs, and hear all these people talk about how awesome they feel, how energetic they are now, how their skin cleared up, lost weight, gained strength, amazing body composition changes, cured diseases, disorders, brought dead pets back to life etc. Me? I feel the same, look the same. I still have zits, I get tired like I used to, I haven't lost or gained any weight, body composition is the same, strength...eh I don't feel strong, (I felt strong this spring) I don't feel fast (I'm not sure I ever felt fast). Even during this workout, I didn't feel stronger, better, faster, more energetic than previous "Frans" not on this diet. It felt like every other "Fran" before it...hard. I know people argue that its still the same kind of hard but you're going so much more intense than before...blah blah kind of stuff. But when I did 5000# ground to over head or "Grace" or even "Annie". I felt FAST. Faster than I had done those movements before, and for the next 20min after. This just felt the same, so was I lacking intensity? Was it really my diet that helped? Or whatever it was in the pullup I figured out. I'm not sure what was going on. I have made HUGE changes in my diet over the past year, and especially in the last two months, and I am still waiting for it to click. When does my aha moment happen? Is there something I am still missing? Am I not strict enough? Have I not done it long enough? Was I that overweight to begin with? Is it stress? Or am I just a giant whiner? I plan on continuing the paleo diet for awhile, but if in 6 months I still feel, sound, look, act the same. I'm putting some damn cheese on my burger.

Its December!

So much has been going on! I can hold on another way but could only do one at a time. I was unpleasant to be around after this one.

Saw District 9 last night, that was interesting. I wish I had gone to an earlier showing so I could keep focus, but it was good. I liked that it wasn't in the US, its hard to explain but worth a night out.

Need to get a grasp on my diet, its all over from one meal on the zone to a day so not on the zone. I am going to be a train wreck at the Montana State Games.

090815

Went to the "ridge run" to watch some friends and athletes. I fear I said some stupid things like, "I'd do it if we had a group" "Lets do a 5k race with a group" "yeah that would be fun!" There was a lot of sun and I had a beer didn't have much to eat. I don't think I was thinking clearly.

090813

Snatch
1-1-1-1-1-1-1

Nailed 115 over and over, 125 my stupid brain wasn't pulling myself under the bar, just pulling it up and going "oh $%&# !" So then I worked on popping my hips, not jumping forward, and not being stupid. Somethings were more successful than others. Worked on some muscle ups since now I have 2 consecutive ring dips. If I am not trying to do a muscle up my hips open fantastically, if I think I might try, it looked like my invisible wheel chair is coming up with me. Grrrr.

090811

400m Run
25 Thrusters 45#
400m Run
25 Burpees
400m Run
25 Thrusters
400m Run

14:05

slow

090808
21 Overhead squats 65#
21 Box Jumps 20"
400m Run
15 OHS
15 Box Jumps
300m Run
9 OHS
9 Box Jumps
200m Run

10:02

090806

Shoulder Press 1-1-1
Push Press 3-3-3
Push Jerk 5-5-5

95-100-107F
ummm 115ish?
135-155(4)-155(3)

I need to start my shoulder press at 100 and then build SLOWLY from there. I don' k know how I got 105 I am starting to think I added wrong. I forgot how to push press, I have become so good at jerking I can't stop! I had to go down to like 85 or 95 and work back up. I don't remember the weight I did, but I know I did 4 because I jerked one in each set. I got 135 pretty well so I went big with 155# and just missed the 5th! Blast! By the time I tried it again I was pooped. I am pretty sure any weight I do once in the jerk I can get again, the first one is always a little off. As a cash out I did 3 x 250 m row. Don't remember times, but I know I crashed and burned from set one to set three and that was the closest to death I have come. All my joints ached, muscles were cramping, it just hurt everywhere.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://ryabell.blogspot.com/2009/08/090806.html' title='3 on 1 off? Right leg rocks at pistols, left leg is stiff and feels like a bag of gravel instead of muscle, at least during pistols. There is some angry tissue in there. HSPU i can't seem to get the bottom inch without a kip so I used no abmat and tried to kip as little as possible. By round 5 I used an abmat for my last 2, I just couldn't get past them. I have not missed them. I pounded out 15 in a round in first round, and after that I was hard to get 2 or 3. It seems like I was not the only one with that problem in this WOD. Dips became singles very quickly for everyone. I thought it was just being sore from the all the push ups the day before. I am a sore little girl in my pecks today. However my head turns to the left more comfortably again! On the bright side today is a rest day, aaaaaaaahh!

090608
2 Cleans 65#
20 Push ups
4 Cleans
18 push ups
6 cleans
16 push ups
8.....14 down to
20 cleans
2 push ups

15:12

This wasn't as difficult as I was expecting. I thought it was going to take me closer to 18 or 20 min. I didn't think my pushups would be that fast. At least for me. I did my first 15 unbroken, in warm ups I have a hard time doing 10! ha. Cleans I did unbroken until 18 which I did twice because counting is not a strong suit of mine. I also did at least 20 pushups in round two as well. Today I can hardly move my head to the left. I blame the pushups. Forgot my purse at home, no lunch for me however it wasn't as agonizing as it usual is.

090607
2x200m sprints

30.28 seconds
31.25 seconds

AMRAP in 10 min
7 wall ball
7 burpee

10 rounds with about 5-10 seconds to spare.

I rested a bit in between the sprints waiting for a guy to get out of his car and in the building so my dog wouldn't follow him. On the way back definitely felt a lot slower.

My shoulders were so tired picking up the wall ball was hard to make myself do in the middle rounds. I rested in-between burpees and wall ball mostly. Around round 7 I made myself not stop on wall ball, must do that more.

090606

ahhh rest

090605

10 Rounds for time
7 pullups
7 burpees

under 8min for 7 rounds? or was it 8 rounds? either way I tore my hand so I stopped.

did my first 7 in a row then fought to get 2-4. The first burpee was always the hardest (in the set of 7) and then I could pound the rest out. Need to work on my death grip on the bar and go back to putting my thumb around.

090604
"FRAN"
21-15-9
Thrusters 65#
Pullups

6:46

last pr was 7:14? ish. I still rested a lot. I did 21 and 9 thrusters unbroken. and 15 in 8 and 7. Pull ups as always a disaster. got 7 or 8 off the bat then 2-4 from there out. Its a PR I should be happy.

My insurance office's building is owned and ran by the Senior Center. They have seniors apartments, and the Center all in the same building as me. They have just asked me to do a presentation about renters insurance for them! Why its important to the landlord and the TENANT! I am pretty excited, although nervous that I won't speak loud or clear enough to be understood. I also have just put in my application with Assurant Health Care to sell health insurance. I am excited to see where these two events lead me!

090603

4 Rounds for time
5 HSPU
10 HPC 95#
25 Squats

7:31
HSPU to 1 ab mat

Need to work on HSPU that extra inch without the abmat make it dang near impossible. Three was almost too much, but I like to rest.

06-01-09
"Kelly"
5 Rounds for time:
400m run
30 Box jump 20"
30 Wall ball 14# 10ft

31:48

Due to a large class I did wall ball first.
Slow again. I crashed on round 3 box jumps I was so tired. I think my last run was faster than the previous 3 though. I was hoping for under 30 but was worried it would take 35. I'll take 31 and change. I did consider going light in the wall ball for speed, but its really the run that takes me the longest. I am trying to not hate running while running, but its so dang hard not to.

05-31-09
CFT (CrossFit Total)

Back Squat 205-225-235 PR
Shoulder press 95-100-107F
Deadlift 255-265-270PR-300PR!

So there was only supposed to be 3 attempts in the events however while doing my warm ups 255 was HARD, so was 265 my old pr, the 270# was EASY. I had no idea what was going on so Jenna announced I was going to do 300#, which I was skeptical, but I was going to try. I got it! There was no video so I did it again. Both time the weights fell off nearing the top, we can't fit 300# on the women's bar with clips so at the struggled at the top some fell off my left side. However I think if they were secure I still would have got it. I couldn't believe I did it! Form wasn't great, but I have done worse with less. I am very excited about it. Funny thing, it felt no harder than 255# or 265# felt that day. I think I got the 105# press in boulder because I used a women's bar. That definitely helped in the deadlift.

05-30-09
21-15-9
Wall Ball 14# 10ft
Burpees

5:17

I couldn't think of a better WOD to do. This was the beginner's workout.

05-29-09
Rest

I did a day of light back squat, somewhere in here, but it was hurting my guts so I didn't go long or heavy. The compression from the weigh felt like my ribs where going to poke out on the right side. Weird. I've been busy at my other job, well mostly stressed so I have been lazy. Plus Jenna's was out of town this week, so my days have been really long and I just want to go home at the end of the day.

05-28-09
For time:
35 Pullups
35 Burpees

5:15

This was supposed to be 50 and 50 but I was trying to go fast so I lightened up the pullups since those are evil to me. I think I could have done all 50 in under 10min though. Pullups felt bad. I have a hard time on the smaller bar. I am being such a wimp I guess.

05-26-09
4 Rounds For Time:
200m Run
10 Goblet Squats 16kg
15 Kettlebell Swings 16kg

8:15

Still slow.

05-25-09
Memorial Day --rested to get back on with main page 3 on 1 off
I think that I was my reasoning.

05-24-2009
"Helen"
3 rounds For time
400m Run
21 KB swings 16kg
12 Pullups

12:58

Blech. I am so slow.

05-22-2009
For time:
75# Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 20 reps
20 Handstand Pushups
75# Sumo Deadlift High Pull, 20 reps
20 Handstand Pushups
75# Thruster, 20 reps
20 Deadhang Pullups
75# Thruster, 20 reps
20 Deadhang Pullups

25:35

I used 1 abmat for HSPU and red band for dead hangs

That was so hard. I dislike the HSPU very much I would do 3 in a row great and then I couldn't do one. I'd fail it 3 times and then do one like it was almost easy. I am not sure what changed to make it so much easier for that time. This happened a lot during this workout. Dead hangs I tried with no band. I got maybe 3 before I switched or I'd still be there now.

Report from the Games

I took a few days rest before the games, probably 1 or 2 more than I should have, but oh well. I wasn't top contender ready anyway. My goal for the games was to complete all 3 workouts as Rx'd, then under the 12min time cutoff. Then I ideally in the top 50% of those females that did it was Rx'd, but Id settle for top 50% overall. There are three workouts announced the week before that we were to complete in about 24-30 hours of each other. Best times win. Top 5 males and females qualify for the Nationals in Aromas, CA in July. Three of us competed Myself, Jenna, and Justin.

9am Saturday
WOD #1 of the Rocky Mountain Regional CrossFit Games

3 Rounds For Time (limit of 12 min)
8 reps of 195# Deadlift
400m run

9:25

So that time was good enough for 3rd from last of the Rx'd, My goals were going to be tough to meet with a start like that. I wanted to run faster, but really just couldn't. I knew I was not first so I took my time on the DL I really didn't want to hurt myself. Overall not my best work, but could have been worse.

During the lunch break there was a "Spectator Event" there were two logs with handles cut into them one was 145# (men) the other 100# (women). Who ever could clean and jerk the logs the most in 1 min one the log. Loni was going to try since no other females were signing up, but her max was 105# so Jenna tired. Due to its robustness its really awkward to pick up let alone clean and jerk so Jenna couldn't quite get it even though it is far from her max. So I volunteered. All I had to do was 1 and it was ours as long as no other women tried. I tried a practice it was really hard. The clean was awkward and more like a reverse curl, then finding balance with it on my chest was really difficult. I was going to stop at one, but i was going to be really mad if someone last min came out and did 2. I had 6 attempts, however dropped one before I got it under control so a total of 5, good enough to win it! After I dropped it I discovered the less time I spent with it on my chest the easier it was. winning that log made my whole trip and made my arms so sore.....wonder if that will bother me in the next WOD?

2pm Saturday
WOD #2
3 Rounds For Time (limit of 12 min)
10 Chest to Bar
10 reps 105# Front squats
10 Burpees

11:49

The first set of pull ups were the best I have ever done! And the most in a row. I flubbed #8 because I was excited, I had never done that well in pull ups before! I love the look on my face in the pullup pic. "PLEASE LET THIS ONE COUNT!" I did all 10 FS in a row and burpees. Round 2 was another story. I did 5 pull ups, jumped off and did 3 more thinking sweet only 2 more look at my judge and he says 5! I wasn't getting proper standards CTB pullup so I had to redo them. I bet I did close to 20 pullups that round. I finally made it past 5 to 9 and then got stuck on 9 for an eternity! I couldn't feel the difference between the ones that did and did not count, super frustrating! I was pretty tired after the pullups but kept bellaring though. 3rd round of pullups I had to redo a few, but this was much faster than round 2. I got done with my front squats and saw I had less than 45 seconds to get 10 burpees done or I was DQ'd. And I don't mean the ice cream! I pushed harder than I probably ever had before and finished with 11 seconds to go. Nice part about finishing last you can crash and not worry about anyone else dropping their weights on you because they are all done! 13 women did not make the time cut off. After this WOD I was still 3rd from last, but 16th from last of all those who attempted it. A lot of people struggled with the heavy front squat. I many not have done all unbroken, but it wasn't that bad. The poor girl behind me had blood curdling screams on every squat, glad that wasn't me. Jenna, my partner in crime at the gym finished with the fastest time of all the women in this WOD by 30 seconds! 5:33 was her time, that is ridiculously fast!

10:40am Sunday
WOD #3
For Time Move 5000# from ground to overhead any way you want using one of these rep and weight schemes. (12 min time limit)
100# for 50 reps
85# for 59 reps
65# for 77 reps
55# for 91 reps

100# for 50 reps in 8min 40sec

I went for it. I figured I was already 3rd from last which wasn't much worse than dead last so why not. I was pretty sure I could do it in 10 so why not! I thought there would be at least 1 or two people who thought so too. Nope, I was the only female to choose 100# and actually the only competitor to chose the max weight (men's was 155# for 40some reps and 7000# total). 8:40! Not even close to the fastest but faster than 26 other people!

Rx'd. However if you did not finish in the 12 min limit they gave you a time of 12:01 and kept you in the rankings instead of DQing them. Which is a little annoying in my small competitive bone because they didn't finish. If you run a 400m but stop at 300m in 2 min then and add 1 second because you didn't make it to 400m in time you did not run 400m in 2min 1sec. I didn't get a faster time by making extra attempts on my pull ups. So if they didn't complete all their reps in time why did they get 12:01? Rant done. So if you take out all the 12:01's I finished 38th out of 41. Still 3rd from last but I hit 2 of three goals, and learned a ton about myself. I can push harder in my daily workouts, and not die. I did it in Denver I can do it in Bozeman. Strength is not my weakness, wind is along with mental toughness.>

WOD #3 RMRCFG from Meriah on Vimeo.

**Thank you Rocky Mountain Regional CrossFit Games page for the pictures!

I am bad at this "updating daily" thing.....

I may not post everyday like I thought I was going to. But better than a few days ago. Going to start ramping down a little to rest up for this weekends CrossFit Regional Qualifiers in Denver. I want to finish all the WODs as Rx'd and in the time limit, I hope I can!

05-11-09

Rest!

0510-09

"GRACE"

95# Clean and Jerk
30 reps for time

3:50

Last time I did this I did it with 85# and it took me 3:26, think. I was hoping to be closer to the first time even though it was 10# heavier. I thought I was stronger, however form was better on this one.

05-09-09

"Nine of Spades"
21-15-9 Reps for time of:
Box Jumps
Kettlebell
SwingsSumo Deadlift High-Pull 75#

6:57

Felt good today. However the running felt really good today. Pullups however did not. I think I did negatives on most of them, I keep fighting my swing. Its so stupid! I am making it more difficult!

05-07-07

Rest!

05-06-09

4 Rounds for time of:
400m Run
50 Squats

14:35

Have I mentioned that I don't like running?

I can't help it, I am a busy person

I have been traveling, and trying to catch up on work. I was hoping I would feel refreshed after 10 days off, but it feels like I never left. I am constantly trying to catch up. However I did have a good time in Florida! I met a lot of Michael's friends and is families away from home! They came from all over and were so friendly! If they are ever in Montana, I hope they know they have a place to stay!

05-05-09

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Game qualifier WOD

21-15-9
Snatch 65#
Pull Ups Chest to Bar

14:59

Whew made the game time cutoff however about 5-8 of my pull ups weren't quite Chest to Bar. On the bright side I felt really sluggish warming up, but my pull ups felt really strong. Not fast, but strong. I did them in sets of 3-4 they were a little easier to connect than last week. So yay for that. I was really tired today I woke up about 3 am and tossed and turned til 5 when the alarm went off. I was thinking about work, the CrossFit games qualifiers, work more, and other aches and pains. I think I would do better if I could stop dreaming about work. It keeps me up quite often. I guess 40s a week in the office isn't enough I have to dream about it too!

05-04-09

Push Press
7-7-7

75-95-100

I had no idea where to start. I did jerk a few, I think was rushing it and jerking it made it faster and easier. I can't really feel it when I do it though. Next time I think I can do more :)

05-03-09

ah rest.

Went to Church for the first time in 5 months. 2nd time in 10 months or so. I think they were waiting for me, the sermon seemed to be tailored to me. Hmmm.

05-02-09

4 Rounds for Time of:
400m Run
21 Thrusters 65#
12 Burpees

19:46

I need to be more aggressive in my runs. I can do them I am faster, must not hold back in fear of getting tired. Duh.

05-01-09

Snatch
1-1-1-1-1-1

Did some at 55-85-95-105 in the am
then more with 55 and 85 that night.
Worked on form mostly. I have put 115 slowly, but easily over my head. My form need work before I put more weight up. I need to pull slower in the beginning, don't pull with my arms, fully open my hips and get under faster. That's all.

04-30-09

7 Rounds for Time
5 Pull ups CTB
10 KB Swings
25 Squats

8:22

My pull ups were so slow. I couldn't connect for the life of me. I am fighting my swing down and starting from scratch with every pull up.

04-29-09

Ok resting today to get back on 3 on 1 off cycle.

04-28-09

Fly home, lazy no WOD

04-27-09

21-15-09
Sumo Deadlift High Pull 95#
Ring Dips (red band for me)

9:27

04-26-09

Too much fun, got lazy no workout!

04-25-09

Rest and Wedding!

Congrats to my brother, Michael and my new sister, Kimberly! As much as running is not comfortable for me it felt like the best 800s I have ever done.
Happy Birthday Daddy! Just for you I sat on the beach all day! Hope you like the cake at the Celebration Dinner!

04-23-09

Some days I shake my fist at CrossFit for making me do ridiculous workouts. This was one of those days. Not only is this long and hard, (stupid knees to elbows), but they have to put it on the page when I am down in Florida. Its 40 degrees hotter than I am currently used to working out in and humidity whats that?! Heat and I don't always get along so well especially while exercising. I like my dry Montana weather. In Florida you think about the WOD and sweat. I know I am whining a bit because its only April! I know it gets a billion degrees hotter and more humid! Ok another least favorite WOD.....

"Filthy 50"
50 Box jumps (24" box I tried setups)
50 Jumping Pull ups
50 Kettle Bell Swings (16kg)
50 Walking Lunges
50 Knees to Elbows
50 Push Press (45#)
50 Back Extensions
50 Wall Ball (10ft 14# ball)
50 Burpees
50 Double Unders

36:22

Last time I did this it took me 33:55 20" box, with 8kg KB, 35# push press, my box for jumping pull ups was taller, we also did Romanian Deadlifts for back extensions. I am pretty sure knees to elbows were more like knees to armpit or belly button. This time I had to battle heat and humidity. I had to sit during the wall balls, it was that or fall over, I was so hot. I couldn't get the heat out of my head, but my belly was cold. Ok enough sob story lets talk about the beach instead! Wheeeee!

Deadlift
1-1-1-1-1-1

I did not do 1-1-1-1-1 there was no rhyme or reason to the reps, just working on form. I still drop my hips too much apparently. So I worked on pushing through the middle of my feet and using my lats to keep the bar in. I did up to 195 a few times 185 mostly and some larger sets of 135. By the time I got down to 135 a set of 5 was completely exhausting.

04-21-09
Rest Day!

04-20-09

Back Squat
3-3-3-3-3

Michael taught me the low bar position. It was really awkward at first and my shoulders were really tight from DT and Angie. I did 185# for all the rounds. My last set of reps the low bar finally felt more comfortable, and made my last effort the easiest.

04-19-2009
Didn't sleep much tonight. I am falling asleep mid sentence and not moving until my alarm goes off. I am so glad it is a rest day and very anxious for some time out of Bozeman. I know I was just out of town, but I am looking for some down time. I want to sleep as long as I want, wake up and NOT have to be somewhere.

090416

5 Rounds for time
5 95# Thrusters
10 24" Box jumps

8:02

I forgot my shoes, because I forget everything these days. It is a good thing my head is attached. I used Jenna's shoes, they are only 1/2 a size smaller than I normally wear, good idea right? Hmmm little squished and awkward. She has some funky inserts that are well formed to her foot, not so much to mine. How bad could it be? Oh good god! Have you ever done 95# thrusters with a cramp in your toes and both arches all at the same time? I have, 40 of them to be exact and 40 box jumps on top of that. The first round it felt like my right foot was going to explode through what felt like a barbed wire fence. That went away going box jump to thrusters. But once I picked up the bar ready for thruster #6 both feet cramped. It hurt so bad even just holding the bar in the racked position hurt. I considered quitting with the explosion feeling, but thought eh its only 10 min. When I was finished I ripped the shoes off both my mangled feet. I got my arches to quit but my left 2nd toe wouldn't straighten out. Still this morning if I even look at it , it cramps. Thrusters and burpees make me feel like a cramp is coming on and sometimes I'll get one on a max effort, but never like this. That is something I won't be doing again.

090415

APRAM in 20
5 ring dips
10 pullups
15 Front squats 65#

7 Rounds

Red band for dips and red band and did gymnastics kip. I was frustrated before go was even mentioned. It shouldn't be this hard still.

090414

Clean1-1-1-1-1-1-1

145-155-165PR-175F-175F-175PR

Yay! last PR was 160# of a HPC because I become afraid of getting under the bar. No video because I did not announce my attempt. It looks like a hard front squat.

090413

Rest

Drive back from Boulder. booooooooooring. So I bugged Jenna with random deep questions.
Wyoming, get yourself a CrossFit already!

090411 and 090412

Gymnastics cert with Tucker at Front Range CF. I can't remember my all time PR on the BS I did a ridiculous amount one time, but I think I was helped. I can't remember so I guess it can't count. I need to get in a better habit of getting pictures and remembering times before I head to Livingston, or big gaps like this happen. Since I have a few WODS (work out of the day) to post I am going to put the most recent first so they stay in order. Its a quick and rare glimpse of me trying to be organized.

090406
"Cindy"
As many rounds as possible (AMRAP) in 20 min of:
5 Pullups
10 Pushups
15 Squats

12 Rounds
PR (personal record) by 2 rounds

This was ok. My shoulder and arm felt weird. My right side has been really tight and sore the past few days and today it felt off too. Today it felt swollen almost. From my bicep to thumb. It felt like it was 2x the size of my other arm. I measured, its not. On a good note I did around 60% of my pullups with getting my Chest to the bar. I haven't been able to do that in a WOD yet so I was pleased. I wasn't even trying. Like round 4 or 5 it just happened. However I still struggle with connecting my pull ups I have got 3 in a row down, 4 sometimes, 5 rarely.

090405
"Rest Day"
4x400m Sprints
1:27
1:36
1:36
1:34

I start out so fast and quickly fizzle. I think I could have done my first one faster, but none of the others. My first round, Mikey, the playful puppy thought we were playing. I kicked him at least 2 times with my back foot, and he stopped right in front of me another 2, I know I lost a little time there. I would like to do this on a straightway or track sometime. Right now I think our 400 is a little short and we have to stop and turn around. I changed something with the way I ran after the first two. I don't know what it was but it felt different. I was trying really hard to keep a longer stride so I kept moving forward. I don't know if that is the right thing to do, but I feel I start taking baby steps and quit moving forward when I get tired. I was trying to prevent that. My shins got tight on the last two, as well. Once I my heart rate slowed down again I was instantly ready for a nap. I went to bed about 9:30 and I don't think I moved until about 5 am. I have been sleeping so hard lately. I think I bus could go through the room and I wouldn't notice. I didn't always sleep this hard, weird.

Alright quick break from WOD talk. Here is a video of me front squatting 185# x 3. I went for 190 and nailed the first one, but crashed on two. Last week in sets of 5 I got 165#, but crashed mid way through 170#. I haven't gone for a 1 rep max in a loooooong time so I am happy with my 3 rep. Sorry for the name, Jenna thinks she is funny.

Front squat a metric $hit T0n from Meriah on Vimeo.

090404
"Elizabeth"
21-15-9
95# Cleans
Ring dips

12:09
red band for ring dips

I dislike ring dips with a deep fiery passion. They are unbelievably hard for me. I finally have been able to do 1 dip without assistance, that only took 14 months. I thought I could do this WOD with the purple band (which we call the crutch), but I did 2 and it was so hard. I did another 2 and almost hit muscle failure. I switched back to red band, disappointingly. I also can't stand the way the bands feel on my shins. It irritates me. I would much rather not have to use it. One of my goals is to do all the WODS at the games as prescribed ("Rx'd") but one of the qualifiers had ring dips in it, no guarantee that mine will but I have to get strong there fast to make that goal! I should probably get muscle ups by then too, ahh!

On a side note I went to an acupuncturist for the first time today. It was odd, but I think I really like it and it helped. I have got some tight shoulders right now and it felt like it alleviated a lot or tension. Massages were leaving them still tight, but this seemed to really help. I hope to go back this week!

090403
21-15-9
65# Thrusters
Burpees

6:53

Wow that hurt. I was hoping for under 10min so I was very pleased with this time. Plus anytime I can keep up with Jenna, makes me feel less like a giant slug. :) My last 9 burpees were almost easy. I think I may be onto something with this eating more stuff.

This video is from last week, and its rather long, sorry. I don't know how to edit yet so you get the full 7 and something minute work out. As far as being WFS(work, family, safe) umm lets just say I didn't know if was going to be videoed and made a poor choice in wardrobe. This is 30 reps of squat cleans and jerks, at 100#.

30 Clean and Jerk, 100# from Meriah on Vimeo.

I am still trying to figure out this blog thing, you should be able to leave comments. I don' t know why you can't. I am working on it.

JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON

Seems like everyone has a blog these days, who am I to go against the flow?

My goal is to keep family and friends updated on what I am doing. Since day by day I seem to get busier and busier and forget to tell people things like, oh yeah I moved or quit this job and started a couple businesses. Funny, I found time to do this though. I hope to update it every day. Anyway there may be some rants and raves on this page, I will try to keep it positive mostly and hopefully WFS. No promises, but I will try to warn you. Sorry Grandma and Grandpa there are going to be lots of videos and pictures on here you won't be able to view. Unless you get a different computer!!

As far as making this page "pretty" good luck. I am not so computer savoy. Be on the watch for random design changes or experiments.

OK today is day one of my workout cycle (3 on 1 off)
5 Rounds For Time:
9 Reps Hang Squat Clean (HSC) 115#
9 Gymnastics Kip Pullups with blue band

14:55

The prescribed work out was 3 rope climbs or a million (i can't remember but it was a lot) towel pull ups instead of the gymnastics pull ups. I need to work on chest to bar pull ups if I want to not scale at the regional qualifiers. I don't plan on placing really high there, but I would like to be top 50%. But only if I don't scale.

Today is also day two of my quest to EAT MORE. I am looking to be at more 2-2.3K calories instead of .9-1.5K. However I got a little carb crazy the past few days. Creamy honey and fruit are my crack.

Here is video of me deadlifting 240# x 3 rep. This is 5# away from my most recent 1 rep max. I have picked up 264# many moons ago, but have been battling bad form. I am finally on the road to better form and am making fast gains. Whew! The sooner I beat my old record the sooner I can get to a 300# deadlift!
Meriah DL 240X3 from Meriah on Vimeo.
